A little more about your role…

We are looking for energetic, self-motivated individuals with a design project leadership background to join our team.  We are keen to bring new skills into the team and are open minded about a candidate’s background provided they can demonstrate relevant experience of hands-on, proactive leadership of design teams that delivers successful outcomes.
As the Technical Director, you will lead a specialist team within WSP. To be successful in this role, you will have extensive experience in delivering major multidisciplinary projects covering various sections to include defence and the nuclear industry, including new build and generation projects, and will play a key role in delivering high-quality design and safety solutions. 
Candidates should achieve the following minimum requirements:
 Background –Coming from an architectural or engineering design background;
Qualifications – Relevant engineering or architectural degree and a UK Chartered professional;
Experience – Have relevant experience working as part of and coordinating design teams on projects from masterplanning and RIBA design stages which are of a construction value greater than £100 million.  This experience should ideally include coordinating multi-disciplinary teams including external consultants;
Location – Be based in our Birmingham ,Manchester or Derby office but willing to work and travel within the UK and internationally on short to medium secondments as the business requires.

Your day-to-day will include doing the following:

•    Operational Leadership: Manage and direct a division of cross-functional engineering teams, ensuring high performance and quality deliverables.
•    Team Leadership: Provide guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for the team.
•    Architectural/Engineering Management: Oversee multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring adherence to technical and safety standards.
•    Sector & Client Development: Act as the primary point of contact for clients, maintaining and developing strong relationships to secure new business.
•    Mobilises the plan for delivering the project.
o    Where appropriate, engages in a handover from the bid team.
o    Finalises the plan for delivering the project and communicates to the project team.
o    Agrees work packages with Discipline leads, as appropriate.
o    Co-ordinates interfaces and collaboration between teams in different Cost Centres.
o    Engages external Sub-consultants, Sub-contractors or Suppliers.
o    Agrees and understands the security controls associated with the project.
•    Ensures technical solutions and deliverables meet the required standard and quality.
o    Delivers required outcomes in accordance with the contract.
o    Explores opportunities for Client and stakeholder 'added value’.
o    Considers future proofing, innovation and sustainability needs. 
o    Applies appropriate lessons from previous 'similar' projects.
•    Manages risk on the project.
o    Identifies, records, evaluates risk both positive (opportunities) and negative (threats).
o    Agrees and communicates action to be taken in response.
•    Manages any changes on the project.
o    Identifies, records, evaluates, and communicates the impacts of change.
o    Obtains Client confirmation of external change.
o    Manages and tracks the impact of all change on the project and invoices as appropriate.
•    Monitors and controls delivery of the project to the plan.
o    Facilitates regular, robust and holistic project reviews on the progress and performance of the project.
o    Ensures health, safety and wellbeing risks and environmental risks are managed and controlled.
o    Seeks informal/formal feedback from the Client on our performance.
o    Actively exploits opportunities to deliver efficiencies and margin improvement.
o    Ensures effective implementation of the project security controls and that these controls have been shared with the project team.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

•    Proven leadership in engineering management and team direction.
•    Experience in engineering consultancy delivering major multidisciplinary Infrastructure projects.
•    Strong background in masterplanning.
•    Experience in client and market development.
•    Excellent commercial negotiation and management skills.
•    Strategic planning
•    Demonstrated ability to deliver complex projects on time and within budget.
•    Strong mentoring and coaching capabilities.
