Job overview

This is a one year term post to cover maternity leave.
 
The CAMHS Advanced Nurse Practitioners work within the Prescribing Team here at Chesterfield CAMHS. They contribute to the delivery of outstanding patient care by:
 
Exercises advanced clinical expertise, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care. Uses highly developed specialist knowledge and skills working autonomously in completing clinical assessments, interpretation of clinical information, diagnosis, formulates complex treatment plans and evaluates care and treatment
 
High profile, accessible and responsive leader, able to demonstrate critical thinking in decision making within CAMHS.
 
Takes responsibility for own evidence based practice and implements and adds to the body of knowledge that supports the speciality CAMHS nursing practice on a local and national level.
 
Leads on the development of strategic planning, service objectives and operational developments of the service working in collaboration with others
 
Leads and participates in research and audit activity, facilitating the cycle of continual quality improvements
 
Promotes the service and clinical excellence by presenting innovations, audit and research.
 
Develop and deliver specific and relevant specialist educational strategies for all disciplines both internally and externally, analysing ongoing training need.

  1. To be an advanced skilled practitioner, within a multi-disciplinary team, providing specialist mental health services to children, adolescents and families in North Derbyshire.
  1. To plan, implement and manage a range of complex therapeutic interventions, including psycho-pharmaceutical interventions, to ensure a client led service and co-ordinated response with other agencies
  1. To establish a co-ordinated system of specialist teaching for students within CAMHS and to link with the Specialist Community Advisor service to contribute to training for mental health care partners. 
  1. To provide specialist advice, consultation to professionals involved in the care of children and adolescents.
  2. To liaise and provide consultations for colleagues in CAMHS and affiliated professions.
  3. To provide leadership for nurses in CAMHS.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 
Clinical
 
  1. To have autonomous responsibility for the case management of a varied case load, including children and young people with severe and complex needs.
 
  1. To provide expert assessment for those young people who meet the service criteria for the specialist mental health service.
 
  1. To utilise a case management model and take responsibility for undertaking highly specialised assessment, planning, implementation of treatment and evaluation of complex needs.
 
  1. The delivery of highly skilled therapeutic interventions with individuals, families and groups, drawing upon evidence based practice, specialist training and knowledge, and utilising NICE guidelines.
 
  1. To ensure high levels of skilled practice by participating in regular clinical and managerial supervision.
 
  1. To provide skilled and specialist supervision to colleagues.
 
  1. To draw up clinical treatment plans in collaboration with the young person and their families/carers.
 
  1. To facilitate and maintain accurate communication and liaison with colleagues, referrers to the service, primary care and external agencies.
 
  1. To possess a high level of knowledge of child protection, mental health, child health and legislation as it applies to children and young people and to incorporate this knowledge in the context of clinical practice.
 
  1. To attend and contribute to statutory child protection conferences and risk strategy meetings/providing specialist knowledge of developmental, emotional, behavioural and mental health perspectives.
 
  1. To communicate with young people, children and their families in a way that empowers them towards informed decision-making.
 
  1. To monitor the physical and mental health of children on medication for complex conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and make clinical decisions accordingly.
 
  1. To be involved in personal and professional development, and to keep abreast of clinical developments within the specialty.
 
  1. To maintain registration with the NMC and adhere to the code of professional conduct as set out by them.
 
  1. To promote and develop specialist nursing policies within CAMHS.
  1. To undertake urgent and emergency mental health assessment as necessary.
 
  1. To autonomously make clinical decisions within the context of assessments and work with families to identify appropriate treatment interventions that best meet the need identified.
 
  1. To promote a wider understanding of the mental health issues relating to young people amongst referrers, other professionals and the wider community.
 
  1. To observe confidentiality as appropriate in all matters relating to clients’ affairs and treatment.
 
  1. To keep accurate records in order to review and evaluate CAMHS provision on a regular basis.
 
Non-Medical Prescribing
 
  1. To provide non-medical supplementary / independent prescribing to young people who are part of case load.
 
  1. Prescribe Controlled drugs and POMs, safety and effectively, acknowledging own limitations and scope of practice adhering to the latest legislation.
 
  1. To participate in non-medical prescribing supervision with a nominated
    consultant child & adolescent psychiatrist.  To maintain high standards of prescribing practice by undertaking continuing professional development and ensuring that non-medical prescribing is prioritised in formal development reviews.
 
  1. To prescribe medication within the clinical boundaries of child and adolescent mental health. Where appropriate a formal clinical management plan should be used that is in line with guidelines from the Department of Health.
 
  1. To actively engage in the reviews of the non-medical prescribing role and report any benefits or drawbacks to the role to the CAMHS Clinical Leadership Team.
 
  1. To work within the legal and ethical frameworks of prescribing for young people and to uphold the standards of prescribing practice that are enforced by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
 
Communication
 
1.
To communicate effectively with children, adolescents, carers and staff across the health community to maximise client outcomes.
 
2.
To utilise communication skills of persuasion, motivation and explanation to encourage patients to make behaviour change where there may be resistance to change.
 
3.
 
 
4.
To use different methods of communicating where there may be barriers to effective communication.
 
To manage and communicate complex, sensitive and potentially contentious information using interpersonal skills requiring a need for empathy and reassurance. To use such skills to appropriately challenge children and adolescents and those involved in their care, including family members and other professionals.
 
Quality Governance

To be actively involved in the implementation and development of Quality Governance.

To collate and interpret quantitative and qualitative data to provide evidence of productivity, outcomes and quality of care.

To actively lead and participate in clinical audit and research.

To take a lead role in the development of CAMHS nursing practice; including training, audit and maintaining professional standards.

To accurately collect relevant activity data required for service monitoring, management and evaluation.

To plan, prioritise and organise effectively and efficiently to deliver patient care and other service demands.

Leadership
 
  1. Develops proposals and business cases for future service development/innovation and provides reports as appropriate e.g. commissioners etc.
 
  1. Leads on the development of strategic planning, service objectives and operational developments relating to the service
 
  1. Develop relationships with patient support groups (speciality specific) to ensure effective support networks
 
  1. Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders developing and maintaining a national nursing profile relating to speciality
 
  1. To work with and alongside local and national networks and partnerships promoting and disseminating evidence of service development
 
  1. Lead on the development and implementation of speciality specific policy, guidelines and protocols as appropriate in conjunction with the Clinical Lead
 
  1. Leads and facilitates change internally and externally as appropriate, ensuring patient and carer involvement throughout the process
 
  1. Acts as a role model providing leadership for nursing within CAMHS
 
  1. Provide clinical supervision both within and external to the Trust in order to support development of individuals and practice
 
  1. Take the lead with investigations and reporting of incidents, complaints and concerns raised relating to the service, ensuring appropriate action is taken
